The latest report released by the World Health Organisation states that around the world, four to five million people get bitten by snakes each year and more than 2.8 million are bitten in India alone.

46,900 deaths occur due to snakebites every year in India. However, the data is not inclusive of certain exclusive factors like faith healing practised in India and death before arriving at the hospital. While these factors need to be studied more closely, fast paced development, antivenom shortage and superstitions are some of the other contributing factors to snakebite deaths in India.
