According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), more than 20,000 Indian housewives have been killing themselves every year since 1997. The recent report released by the NCRB points to the fact that suicide committed by housewives is 7% higher than the farmers suicide in India.

There are no clear reasons attributed to these suicides. This unawareness is because of the lack of cognisance given to the numbers by the media and policy makers in India. A study by the medical journal ‘The Lancet,’ reports that suicides could be caused because of biological, social or economic reasons or a combination of all these factors. Is’nt it high time we pay heed to this rising public health crisis in India?
